About the Author
Guillem Fernandez — Engineering Director & People Engineer
I am Guillem Fernandez, and I define myself as a People Engineer: someone who treats the human side of engineering with the same rigor as the technical side, because in most organizations they turn out to be the same problem seen from two different angles.
I hold an Engineering Degree in Software Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and my career since has moved through nearly every seat at the table: Mobile Team Lead at HostelWorld, Senior iOS Developer, Senior Lead Engineer at Stella&Dot and PaddyPower, Managing Director of Codurance’s Barcelona office, co-founder and CEO of CoKaiDo, Head of Engineering at Bumble, Head of Transformation & Operations at Allianz Technology, and currently Head of Product Development at Advance 52 (G+D). Along the way I have founded two companies, helped build two more from zero, and been part of many other initiatives I am proud of.
That range is not a list of job titles — it is the reason this book exists. I have led transformation programs that unified distributed organizations across countries, built high-performance teams from scratch, run a consultancy helping other companies adopt real engineering practice, and sat in executive rooms where a team’s technical excellence meant nothing until someone could translate it into terms the business could act on. I have made the mistakes this book warns against, at every layer of the stack, before I learned to see them coming.
I also teach at the University of Barcelona, because sharing what I have learned — and having it challenged by people still forming their own ideas — is one of the best ways I know to keep the thinking honest.
